The death toll from last week’s devastating flash floods in Nepal has climbed to 1,344, with authorities intensifying search and rescue operations for 4,886 people who remain out of contact, including 606 foreigners.
According to the latest data released by Nepal Police, 1,344 bodies swept away by the Bhote Koshi River had been recovered as of 8 a.m. on Saturday. The toll could rise further as search teams continue operations across areas devastated by flooding along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river corridors in central Nepal.
Authorities believe a significant number of those still unaccounted for could be trapped inside tunnels at 11 hydropower projects located along the two river systems. On Friday, two people were rescued alive from a tunnel at the 60-MW Upper Trishuli 3A hydropower project in Rasuwa district.
The Nepal government said rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate missing people, while authorities are simultaneously undertaking body recovery, identification and relief operations.
Security agencies have deployed additional personnel in the affected areas. Police said 8,962 people, including 1,552 foreigners, have so far been rescued.
Efforts to identify the recovered bodies have also been stepped up. Police said DNA samples have been collected from 1,260 deceased people and 1,012 relatives, taking the total number of samples collected to 2,272.
Nepal Police has deployed 7,912 personnel for search, rescue and relief operations. Sixty-five police personnel have been affected by the disaster, while 25 remain out of contact.
The floods have caused extensive damage to infrastructure and private property along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems.
The Nepal government has also sought international support for reconstruction and restoration efforts in the affected areas once rescue and relief operations are completed.
