Russia has rejected Ukraine’s warning that its airspace is unsafe for civilian aviation, calling the notice misleading, factually distorted and without legal force.
In a statement posted on its official website, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Ukraine’s warning misrepresented the situation and could mislead users of Russian airspace. Moscow also accused Kyiv of carrying out reckless acts that it described as terrorist activities and said the Ukrainian remarks posed a direct threat to civil aviation.
The ministry said relevant Russian authorities were in contact with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and had sent an urgent appeal to the organisation’s Secretary-General. It reiterated that Russia remained committed to ensuring the safety of civil aviation.
On Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned international airlines that Russian airspace was becoming “completely unsafe”, citing what he described as an escalation in Russian missile and drone attacks.
Meanwhile, Russian authorities reported a series of Ukrainian drone and artillery attacks in the Belgorod and Moscow regions that they said killed one civilian and injured 21 others.
Belgorod acting Governor Alexander Shuvayev said the region came under 178 attacks over a 24-hour period, involving artillery fire and drones, with one person killed.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said Russian air defences had intercepted 548 drones targeting the Moscow region between Wednesday morning and Thursday noon. A separate drone strike triggered a fire at a plant in the Bogorodsky district, according to regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov.
Amid the continuing conflict, Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier this week that negotiations on Ukraine had stalled. He rejected reports of a possible new mobilisation following the State Duma election as “nonsense” and said Moscow remained open to substantive negotiations aimed at achieving a lasting and comprehensive peace in Ukraine and Europe.
