Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Friday said India’s sporting ambition should go beyond winning medals, with the focus instead on strengthening every sport represented at major international competitions.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Archery Association of India’s World Archery Para Series Amdavad 2026, Shah said the approach under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership was aimed at creating a comprehensive sporting ecosystem covering competition, training, infrastructure, equipment and specialised support systems.
“Our aim is not merely to win the maximum number of medals, but to strengthen all the sports included in the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Police Games and other such competitions,” Shah said.
The World Archery Para Series is being held in Ahmedabad from September 5 to 9, with 108 athletes from 19 countries taking part.
Shah said India was poised to emerge as a global hub for sports training and the manufacturing of sports facilities and equipment. He also said India and Gujarat could develop into major international centres for sports injury treatment and rehabilitation.
“In the coming days, India will rapidly emerge as a global leader in sports engineering and sports medical science, while also becoming a major medical centre for the treatment and rehabilitation of sports injuries,” he said.
He said facilities being developed in Ahmedabad would meet international standards and remain useful to athletes beyond the events hosted in the city, contributing to the broader objective of making India the world’s largest sporting hub.
Shah also highlighted the achievements of Indian para archers Harvinder Singh, Sheetal Devi, Rakesh Kumar, Shyam Sundar Sami and Payal Nag at the international level.
He said sporting infrastructure, practice and coaching alone could not create champions, stressing that passion, dedication and determination were equally important.
In a post on X, Shah described the World Archery Para Series as a test of archers’ “single-minded focus” and said the competition would set new benchmarks of excellence.
