Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s Janmashtami greetings, invoking Lord Krishna’s teachings on dharma, righteousness and love, have triggered discussion in political circles over whether the gesture signals a shift from the state’s longstanding Dravidian rationalist tradition or an attempt to embrace greater cultural inclusivity.
Janmashtami, celebrated across India to mark the birth of Lord Krishna, is routinely acknowledged by political leaders across the country. In Tamil Nadu, however, the Dravidian political movement has historically been associated with rationalism, secularism and social justice, along with opposition to religious orthodoxy.
The movement emerged in the early 20th century under the influence of Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and challenged caste hierarchies and what its proponents viewed as Brahminical dominance associated with Hindu religious practices. Its ideological legacy shaped the politics of leaders such as former Chief Ministers C.N. Annadurai and M. Karunanidhi.
Annadurai combined Tamil cultural pride with a secular political outlook, while Karunanidhi was more explicit in his rationalist views and frequently questioned Hindu rituals and mythology in his writings and speeches.
Against this backdrop, Vijay’s public greeting on Sri Krishna Jayanti is being viewed by some observers as a departure from the traditional political positioning associated with the Dravidian movement.
Analysts see the gesture as potentially part of Vijay’s effort to establish a distinctive political identity for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). His approach appears to combine Tamil identity with selective religious inclusivity, potentially allowing the party to reach voters beyond traditional ideological constituencies.
Vijay’s popularity as a film star could also help him connect with younger voters, some of whom may have a different relationship with the rationalist traditions that shaped earlier generations of Tamil Nadu politics.
The approach could appeal to moderate Hindu voters who favour cultural representation, while also risking criticism from sections of the Dravidian and rationalist camps.
The political significance of the gesture will become clearer over time. It could broaden Vijay’s electoral appeal and contribute to a changing political discourse in Tamil Nadu, but it may also prompt debate over whether religious symbolism can coexist with the state’s established Dravidian ideological framework.
