The terrorist killed during a joint security operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district has been identified as Yasir, a Pakistani national and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) member, police said on Saturday.
The identification was made a day after security forces neutralised the terrorist during Operation Ashdar in the Ashdar Gali area of Budgam. Confirming the development in a post on X, the J&K Police said, “You can run but you can’t hide,” while identifying the slain militant as a Pakistani national affiliated with the LeT.
An AK-series rifle and other war-like stores were recovered from the slain terrorist, officials said.
The operation was launched on Thursday following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of a group of terrorists in the area. A patrol of Para-commandos came under fire and exchanged fire with the militants.
Troops of the Rashtriya Rifles and personnel of the J&K Police subsequently joined the operation. Despite darkness and difficult conditions in the densely forested area, the security forces maintained the operation and prevented the hiding terrorist from escaping.
Budgam has witnessed numerous encounters since terrorism emerged in Jammu and Kashmir more than 36 years ago.
One of the longest operations in the district took place in 1995, when Pakistani terrorist commander Mast Gul entered Chrar-e-Sharief with a group of militants and laid siege to the revered Sufi shrine of Sheikh Nuruddin Wali.
The Indian Army refrained from storming the town to avoid civilian casualties and prevent damage to the shrine. The standoff lasted 66 days before Mast Gul set fire to the shrine, with the blaze spreading rapidly into the densely populated town.
The Army, along with the J&K Police, paramilitary forces and civil administration, immediately launched relief and rescue operations. Mast Gul managed to escape and subsequently crossed into Pakistan.
The Chrar-e-Sharief operation resulted in the deaths of 20 terrorists, two Army soldiers and four civilians.
