A 38-year-old woman died in Nagpur after she was allegedly assaulted by her husband during an argument over her decision to attend a dance class instead of preparing food, police said. Her 41-year-old husband, Krishna Lal Yadav, has been arrested and booked for murder.
The victim, Yamini Krishna Lal Yadav, and her husband have two young children. The alleged assault took place after Krishna Lal returned home from work and asked Yamini to prepare food for him and the children. Police said Yamini was getting ready to attend a dance class organised within their housing society and declined to cook at that time.
The disagreement allegedly turned violent. Police said Krishna Lal was under the influence of alcohol and allegedly assaulted Yamini, attacking her around the neck and abdomen. The incident reportedly occurred in front of their two children.
After the assault, Yamini complained of severe pain in her neck and abdomen and reportedly asked her husband to get painkillers. Krishna Lal went to a nearby medical shop, but it was closed, and he returned without the medicine.
Yamini’s condition later deteriorated and her abdomen reportedly began swelling. She was taken to a hospital, where she died during treatment.
Police initially registered an accidental death case and sent the body for post-mortem examination. The examination subsequently revealed serious injuries, including a fractured neck bone and severe damage to the intestines and other internal organs. The findings also reportedly indicated signs of strangulation.
Yamini’s brother said the family had initially believed that her death was accidental but became aware of the alleged violence after the post-mortem report.
“We were in Mumbai when we received a phone call informing us that my sister had passed away. The post-mortem report revealed that she had been strangled and had suffered injuries to her abdomen. It showed that she had been attacked in the stomach. Based on the findings, the police immediately registered an FIR and arrested my brother-in-law, Krishna Lal Yadav. He was booked under Section 302 for murder,” he said.
Her brother also said the couple had faced arguments in the past and that Yamini had occasionally spoken to him about their domestic disputes. However, she had discouraged relatives from intervening, telling them that the disagreements were a family matter and that their involvement could create further problems at home.
Police questioned Krishna Lal after examining the post-mortem findings and subsequently arrested him. A murder case has been registered, and further investigation is underway to establish the sequence of events and circumstances surrounding Yamini’s death.
