The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday condemned recent threats allegedly issued against Kashmiri Pandits and urged the authorities to identify those behind them, while Congress and CPI leaders questioned whether the threats were genuine and warned against their possible use for political purposes.
The reactions came days after two letters purportedly issued by the United Liberation Council (UCL) targeted Kashmiri Pandit employees and disclosed their personal details.
PDP spokesperson Mohammad Iqbal Tramboo said the return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits was a shared aspiration of people and political parties in Jammu and Kashmir.
“If there are any obstacles to this, those need to be looked into. We need to identify who these people or agencies are that are preventing their return, as this is dangerous for Jammu and Kashmir,” Tramboo told IANS.
CPI MP P. Santhosh Kumar stressed that the authenticity of the threats needed to be properly established.
“Whether these fresh threats are genuine or not, that is all the more important,” he said, adding that if the threats were genuine, his party stood with Kashmiri Pandits and every citizen of Kashmir.
Congress leader Rakesh Sinha alleged that such threats were being used to create an atmosphere that could prevent the Centre from restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. He also accused the BJP-led government of undermining the federal structure.
Congress MP Manoj Kumar questioned why action had not been taken over the alleged threats and claimed that the issue was repeatedly being brought to the forefront for “political gains”.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir BJP spokesperson Altaf Thakur criticised the National Conference after party president and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah questioned why Kashmiri Pandit employees were receiving threat letters while senior Hindu officers posted in Jammu and Kashmir were not.
Thakur alleged that the National Conference followed a “soft separatism” line and said the threats to Kashmiri Pandits were a serious concern for both the community and security agencies.
Kashmiri Pandit Bhushan Lal said the community was being treated like a “football”, alleging that it was being repeatedly targeted and pushed from one side to another.
“We are residents of this place. Why do we receive notices every day telling us to leave? What have we done? Is this not our motherland? Are we not citizens of this country?” he told IANS.
“It has been 36 years since we were displaced from our own land,” Lal added.
