Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says he has no financial or professional need to keep working, but the prospect of missing the next phase of artificial intelligence (AI) development is enough to keep him going.
“I’ve been working a long time and surely I don’t have to work, but I don’t want to miss, I’m definitely not going to miss the next 10, 15 years,” Huang said during a fireside chat with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
Huang said the rapid advancement of AI had dramatically increased his own ambitions, as well as those of Nvidia and the wider technology industry.
“The ambition of the industry, the ambition of my colleagues, my own ambition has really been supercharged,” he said.
He offered an optimistic outlook for the coming decade, predicting that AI could compress the timelines of major projects. Work that currently takes 10 years could potentially be completed in one, while projects requiring a year could be finished within a month, he said.
Huang argued that AI was enabling individuals, companies and governments to tackle challenges at a scale that previously seemed impossible. He pointed to estimates that AI-driven innovation could generate $20 trillion to $50 trillion in economic benefits globally.
He urged countries to approach AI with optimism and greater ambition, rather than allowing uncertainty to dominate the debate.
Huang also rejected the idea that AI would simply eliminate human workers. While technology will automate certain tasks and skills, he said humans would continue to provide purpose, context and meaning.
Describing AI as a potential equaliser, Huang noted that people can increasingly communicate with computers using ordinary language. Lutnick said the technology could effectively put advanced expertise within everyone’s reach, to which Huang responded that “everybody is that person now”.
Lutnick praised Huang as “an American treasure”, saying Nvidia was helping lead the US towards technological possibilities once confined largely to science fiction.
Huang co-founded Nvidia in 1993 and has served as its President and CEO since its inception. The company began as a graphics technology specialist before its processors became central to modern AI systems.
Born in Taiwan, Huang moved to the US as a child and studied electrical engineering at Oregon State University and Stanford University. Under his leadership, Nvidia has become one of the world’s most valuable technology companies.
