The Congress high command has reportedly asked Telangana Minister for Forest, Environment and Endowment Konda Surekha to resign following her daughter’s recent remarks against Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, amid allegations of indiscipline within the party.
According to party sources, the high command took the decision after the Disciplinary Committee of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) recommended strong action against Surekha. The party leadership has also reportedly prepared to dismiss her from the Cabinet if she refuses to resign.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is likely to inform Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla about the decision after returning from New Delhi later on Thursday.
However, sources close to Konda Surekha have denied that she has been asked to step down. They said the minister continues to maintain that she has committed no wrongdoing and therefore sees no reason to resign.
The reported decision followed a crucial meeting between AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal and Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi on Thursday. The meeting came after several rounds of discussions with the Telangana leadership over the past three days.
On Wednesday, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, Surekha and Telangana Congress president Mahesh Kumar Goud separately met AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge. Revanth Reddy and Goud also held meetings with Venugopal, while Surekha met Telangana Congress in-charge Meenakshi Natrajan.
After her meeting, Surekha told reporters that she had conveyed everything she wanted to communicate to the party leadership.
Defending herself, Surekha said she belonged to the Backward Class and questioned whether there could be “one justice for her and another for others”. She also pointed to allegations against ministers from other social groups and asked what action would be taken against them.
The minister maintained that her performance in the government had been good and that there were no corruption allegations against her.
Surekha also objected to the show-cause notice issued to her over remarks made by her daughter. She said her daughter was married, independent and had the freedom to express her views, arguing that she could not be held responsible for what her daughter said.
She further questioned the disciplinary committee’s decision to issue the notice to her and demanded that the party also issue notices to MLAs and MLCs who had spoken against her. She also sought action against those allegedly behind such statements.
The Congress high command’s reported decision now puts the continuation of Surekha in the Telangana Cabinet under further uncertainty, with the Chief Minister expected to communicate the matter to the Governor.
