Punjab Cabinet Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian on Thursday reviewed the state government’s ‘Yudh Nashya Virudh’ anti-drug campaign in Ferozepur and directed officials to intensify efforts to eliminate drug abuse and trafficking.
Chairing a meeting at the District Administrative Complex, Khuddian called for strict action against drug traffickers and reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards the illegal trade. The meeting was attended by district administration and police officials, along with district, constituency and block-level coordinators and volunteers associated with the campaign.
Khuddian directed senior police officials to identify villages affected by drug abuse and take firm action against those involved in trafficking. He also urged residents to report drug peddlers to the police, assuring that the identities of informants would be kept confidential.
He said the fight against drugs required collective efforts from the government and society. Social organisations and NGOs were asked to coordinate with the civil and police administration to strengthen the campaign.
The minister also stressed the need to prevent young people from falling into drug abuse by promoting sports and developing village-level stadiums so that youth could access sports facilities close to their homes.
Khuddian said people battling drug addiction should be identified and admitted to government de-addiction centres, where free treatment is available.
Ferozepur Urban MLA Ranbir Singh Bhullar, Ferozepur Rural MLA Rajnish Kumar Dahiya, Guruharsahai MLA Fauja Singh Sarari, SSP Bhupinder Singh Sidhu, ADC (Development) Krishna Pal Rajput, Malwa Zone Vice Coordinator of Nasha Mukti Morcha Gurpreet Singh and District Coordinator Harjinder Singh (Kaka Saran) were also present.
Drug Smuggler’s Property Demolished
Meanwhile, Ferozepur Police and the Revenue Department jointly demolished the property of identified drug smuggler Sona Singh at Chinne Wala Jhugge in the Sadar area.
According to officials, Sona Singh is facing prosecution under the NDPS Act in connection with trafficking commercial quantities of contraband. Authorities said strict action, including demolition and confiscation of properties allegedly acquired through drug proceeds, would continue against drug smugglers across the district.
