Two people were killed and six others, including three police officers, were injured in a shooting at a high-rise apartment building in Minneapolis, Minnesota, local media reported. The suspect later died by suicide.
The shooting took place on Wednesday afternoon local time. According to the City of Minneapolis, police officers were dispatched to the scene at around 4:36 p.m. local time.
Officers entered the apartment building after receiving reports of gunfire and encountered victims inside. They then heard additional shots and followed the sound to an upper floor of the building, according to local television station KSTP.
Police encountered a haze on the upper floor that significantly restricted visibility. Three officers were injured during the incident, two of them by gunfire.
Local television station KARE reported that the shooting began as a domestic incident involving the suspect and one of the victims. The suspect allegedly opened fire at responding officers before retreating into an apartment.
The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, and authorities are working to establish the exact sequence of events.
The incident comes amid a series of shootings in the US in recent weeks.
On August 29, a police officer was killed and another injured during a shooting at Southeast Park in Columbia, South Carolina. Police Chief W.H. “Skip” Holbrook said the officers had responded to a reported domestic dispute. The suspect also died in that incident.
Earlier, on August 15, one person was killed and four others injured in a shooting at a park in Lexington, Kentucky.
