ISI-Backed Bangladesh Terror Groups Raise Spillover Threat to India Through Radicalisation, Arms Smuggling

New Delhi, September 3, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Indian security agencies are closely monitoring the activities of terror groups operating from Bangladesh, including the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and its splinter outfit, Neo-JMB, amid concerns over radicalisation, arms smuggling and a possible spillover into India.

According to Intelligence Bureau officials, these groups, allegedly backed by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), have been attempting to carry out violent activities in Bangladesh with the objective of destabilising the country.

Indian agencies are particularly concerned about the potential impact on West Bengal and the northeastern states. Officials said the groups’ activities could create security challenges along the border, with radicalisation and weapons trafficking emerging as major areas of concern.

An official said the groups were also planning to target armouries and smuggle looted weapons into India, particularly the northeastern region. Security agencies are separately monitoring alleged radicalisation camps operating in areas close to the India-Bangladesh border, amid fears that extremist networks could expand their influence across the frontier.

Concerns over radicalisation and weapons proliferation have also been raised in Bangladesh. Former Bangladesh Foreign Minister A.K. Abdul Momen has urged the United Nations to intervene, warning that radicalisation is increasing and that the security situation in the country is deteriorating.

Momen has also sought international scrutiny of alleged human rights violations, prison overcrowding and custodial deaths. He claimed that nearly four lakh detainees were being held without formal charges, an allegation that requires independent verification.

Another Indian official described the developments as part of what he called a “typical ISI playbook”, alleging that Pakistan’s intelligence agency was seeking to strain India-Bangladesh relations while supporting extremist elements.

Officials further said the strategy could extend beyond terror attacks and arms trafficking to online disinformation and communal polarisation. They expressed concern that groups such as Neo-JMB could be used for fake narrative campaigns targeting West Bengal and the northeastern states.

Security officials also warned that attempts to exploit communal tensions and alleged attacks on minorities, particularly Hindus in Bangladesh, could further complicate the regional security environment.
