Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Thursday decided to remove Forest, Environment and Endowment Minister Konda Surekha from the Council of Ministers with immediate effect, following the Congress high command’s action over alleged indiscipline.
According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, the recommendation for her removal has been sent to the Governor.
The Chief Minister also decided to rescind the appointment of Dr G. Chinna Reddy as Vice Chairman of the Telangana Planning Board with immediate effect. Gadwal Vijayalakshmi has been appointed to replace him.
In other appointments, Revanth Reddy approved the appointment of Nerella Sharada as Chairperson of the Telangana State Commission for Women and former Rajya Sabha member G. Sudha Rani as Chairperson of the Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA).
Government Orders relating to Chinna Reddy’s removal and the new appointments have been issued.
The decisions came after the Congress high command stepped in over alleged indiscipline involving Surekha and Chinna Reddy. The state Congress Disciplinary Committee had recommended strong action against both leaders.
Surekha had been facing criticism following remarks made by her daughter Sushmitha against Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. The minister had also objected to a show-cause notice issued to her, arguing that she could not be held responsible for her daughter’s personal views.
The high command’s decision followed a crucial meeting between Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal and party leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi on Thursday. This came after a series of meetings with Telangana’s Congress leadership over the past three days.
Revanth Reddy, Surekha and Telangana Congress president Mahesh Kumar Goud had separately met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday. Revanth Reddy and Goud also held meetings with Venugopal, while Surekha met AICC Telangana in-charge Meenakshi Natrajan.
After her meeting, Surekha told the media that she had conveyed her concerns to the party leadership.
Asserting that she belongs to a backward class, Surekha had questioned whether different standards were being applied to different leaders.
“There can’t be one justice for me and another for others,” she had said, pointing to what she described as serious allegations against ministers belonging to other social groups and asking what action would be taken against them.
Surekha also maintained that her performance as a minister had been good and claimed that there were no corruption allegations against her.
