The appointment of retired Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust drew praise from BJP leaders on Thursday, while opposition leaders raised questions over transparency, accountability and alleged irregularities in the management of the Ram Temple.
Welcoming the appointment, BJP spokesperson R.P. Singh congratulated Mishra and said his role in Operation Sindoor demonstrated his capabilities and commitment to the country.
“Congratulations to Jeetendra Mishra. Jeetendra Mishra ji led Operation Sindoor and secured victory for India. We expect that he will handle this new responsibility in the same manner and also bring transparency here,” Singh told IANS.
BJP MLA Ram Kadam described the Ram Mandir as a place of faith and reverence for crores of devotees and said its construction represented the culmination of a 500-year-long struggle. He noted that more than 6,000 applications had reportedly been received for the CEO position and said Mishra’s experience in Operation Sindoor was an important factor in his selection.
BJP MP Santosh Pandey also welcomed the decision, describing Mishra as a patriotic and honest officer who had dedicated 43 years to serving the country. He said Mishra had played an important role in Operation Sindoor, which he described as a successful operation that received global appreciation.
BJP National Spokesperson Guru Prakash Paswan said the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust is an autonomous and independent institution with its own rules governing appointments. He pointed out that individuals from different backgrounds, including the late Kameshwar Chaupal of Bihar, had also been associated with the Trust.
BJP West Bengal president Samik Bhattacharya said Mishra would oversee the construction of the grand Ram Temple and ensure that the work progressed properly.
Chhattisgarh Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal described Mishra’s appointment as a matter of “coincidence and good fortune” and said his experience and stature would help prevent a recurrence of incidents witnessed in the past.
Uttar Pradesh Minister Narendra Kashyap also termed the appointment a positive decision, saying a person who had played a major role in Operation Sindoor was a patriot and nationalist capable of taking charge of the Trust’s responsibilities.
JD(U) National General Secretary Shyam Rajak welcomed the appointment while stressing the need for close monitoring. He said replacing officials when irregularities are reported could help improve the functioning of an institution and described Mishra as an honest officer with a strong military background.
Former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh said Mishra had performed well during Operation Sindoor but cautioned that his new responsibilities would be different. “The situation here is different. There are hidden enemies here, so some caution will have to be exercised,” he said.
Samajwadi Party MP Ramashankar Rajbhar also welcomed Mishra’s appointment, noting that the former Air Marshal is from Bhopatpura village in the Bhatpar Rani Assembly constituency, which falls within his parliamentary constituency.
However, Rajbhar said Mishra would face challenges in carrying out his responsibilities, alleging that government pressure affects the functioning of officers in Uttar Pradesh. He also raised concerns over alleged irregularities related to the Ram Temple and said devotees and saints in Ayodhya had previously expressed concerns, including over alleged theft of offerings and the handling of such complaints.
Rajbhar said he hoped Mishra would work independently and protect the temple’s funds from misuse.
Congress MLA Nana Patole, meanwhile, criticised the appointment and alleged that several saints had expressed reservations over the manner in which the Ram Temple’s affairs were being handled.
Patole accused the BJP and RSS of exploiting people’s faith in the Ram Temple and alleged that temple-related funds were being misused. He said the government had a responsibility to respect religious leaders and protect the sanctity of the temple.
The appointment of Mishra comes as the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust enters a new phase of administrative oversight, with political reactions highlighting both expectations of greater transparency and concerns over the management of the temple’s affairs.
