Ukraine has welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to move from an “endless war” towards an end to the conflict, with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha describing India as a “global power”.
Sybiha made the remarks during his meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Kyiv, where the Indian minister is on the first-ever dedicated bilateral visit to Ukraine by an Indian External Affairs Minister.
“Honoured to welcome my Indian colleague S Jaishankar to Kyiv for the first-ever dedicated bilateral visit of an Indian External Affairs Minister to Ukraine,” Sybiha said in a post on X.
He said the visit was taking place amid escalating Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities, port infrastructure and civil shipping, adding that Kyiv was “constantly under attack” and appreciating Jaishankar’s visit.
Sybiha said the two sides discussed restoring freedom of navigation in the Black Sea and global food security. He added that Ukraine welcomed PM Modi’s call to move from an endless war towards an end to the war and said Kyiv remained ready for diplomacy.
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister also said the two countries discussed bilateral cooperation in areas including infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, technological innovation and digitalisation. He said both sides agreed to work towards convening the next meeting of the India-Ukraine Intergovernmental Commission to convert opportunities into mutually beneficial projects.
PM Modi had reiterated India’s support for efforts towards peace in Ukraine during his bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek.
“Every day spent in war pushes humanity backwards, while every step taken towards peace fills humanity with a new hope and enthusiasm. We must move from an endless war towards an end to the war. This is essential for the well-being of humanity,” Modi said in his opening remarks.
He also reiterated that India supports all efforts towards peace and would continue to do so.
