Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has expressed disappointment over Rohit Sharma missing a century by eight runs in the third ODI against the West Indies, saying he hopes the veteran batter will retire with more ODI hundreds than his age.
Rohit scored 92 in the match as India secured a 2-1 series victory. The West Indies won the final ODI by successfully chasing a target of 352, powered by an unbeaten 162 from captain Shai Hope.
Speaking to JioStar, Gavaskar said Rohit could potentially bring his international career to a close after the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. He believes finishing with more ODI centuries than one’s age would be a special achievement and wants Rohit to reach that milestone.
Gavaskar noted that a century in the third ODI would have taken Rohit closer to the target, adding that he considers the number of hundreds a reflection of a player’s consistency and longevity. He also recalled his own final year in international cricket, when he aimed to score as many Test centuries as his age at retirement, which was 38. He said he was dismissed in the 90s three times during that period.
Gavaskar also highlighted a change in Rohit’s batting approach since the 2023 ODI World Cup. While Rohit had adopted an aggressive approach from the start of innings during the tournament, Gavaskar believes the opener now places greater emphasis on the value of staying at the crease.
He said Rohit is capable of converting starts into big scores and praised his ability to score centuries in 70 to 80 deliveries, describing that scoring rate as valuable in a 50-over match. Gavaskar added that Rohit’s focus on substantial contributions would benefit the team.
