The Indian Golf Union (IGU) has approved a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh for Pranavi Urs in recognition of her historic gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, where she became the first Indian woman to win an individual golf gold at the continental event.
The IGU Governing Council also announced a cash award of Rs 3 lakh for each member of the Indian women’s golf team following its silver-medal finish. Pranavi teamed up with Olympians Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar to secure India’s first-ever Asian Games medal in the women’s team golf event.
IGU president Brijinder Singh congratulated Pranavi on her achievement, describing it as a moment of immense pride for Indian golf. He said the cash award was approved in recognition of her talent, hard work, determination and commitment to the sport.
Singh added that the awards were a token of appreciation for the golfers’ contributions and for bringing honour to Indian golf.
Pranavi’s gold ended India’s 24-year wait for an Asian Games golf title. The country’s previous gold had come in the men’s individual event at the 2002 Busan Games, where Shiv Kapur emerged victorious.
Before Pranavi’s triumph, Aditi Ashok’s silver medal at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games was India’s only medal in the women’s individual golf event. Pranavi had finished fourth at those Games.
India’s latest success also marked its fourth gold medal in golf at the Asian Games. The country’s first titles came at the 1982 New Delhi Games, where Lakshman Singh won the men’s individual gold and joined Rishi Narain, Amit Luthra and Rajeev Mohta to claim the men’s team title.
