The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mumbai Zonal Unit, has busted an alleged drug trafficking network and seized 547 grams of a substance that tested positive for cocaine/methaqualone during an operation in Mira Road, the agency said on Saturday.
Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officers launched surveillance after receiving information that a Kenyan national was travelling by bus from Indore to Mumbai to allegedly deliver a consignment of narcotic drugs to a Nigerian national.
The officers intercepted the Kenyan woman along with the Nigerian national, who had reportedly arrived in Mira Road to receive the suspected consignment.
During a search of the Kenyan national’s bag, officers recovered two packets marked “LV” containing a white crystalline substance weighing 547 grams in total. A field test using an NDPS testing kit indicated the substance was positive for cocaine/methaqualone, the DRI said.
The seized substance has been taken into custody, and both individuals were arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The agency said further investigation is underway to determine the source of the suspected drugs, their intended destination and whether additional individuals or entities are linked to the alleged trafficking network.
The DRI said the operation reflected its continued focus on intelligence-led enforcement against the trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
The agency added that such operations are aimed at identifying and disrupting organised networks involved in the illicit movement and distribution of narcotics, while preventing their circulation.
The latest action is also part of broader efforts against drug abuse and illicit narcotics under the government’s Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, the DRI said.
