Actress Karisma Kapoor has revisited cherished memories of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at RK Studios, recalling how her grandfather, legendary filmmaker Raj Kapoor, turned the festival into a special community celebration involving studio staff and residents from the neighbourhood.
Karisma shared the memories during an upcoming festive episode of Sony Entertainment Television’s India’s Best Dancer Season 5, which celebrates the spirit of ‘India Wala Dance’.
The Raja Hindustani actress revealed that Ganesh Chaturthi was celebrated at RK Studios for many years and had become a much-loved tradition. However, the celebrations at the studio stopped after Raj Kapoor’s death. The Kapoor family, she said, has continued to observe the festival at their respective homes.
“Ganesh Chaturthi RK Studios mein bohot saalon se manaya jaata tha aur bohot famous bhi tha, saare staff aur neighbourhood ke saare log aate the,” Karisma said.
She added that despite the celebrations at RK Studios coming to an end, the festival remains an important part of the Kapoor family’s life.
“Lekin mere saare Kapoor family ke gharon mein Ganesh Chaturthi aaj bhi hota hai. So it is a very important part of our family and hum sabhi jaate hain chahe hum kahin bhi ho, shooting chal rahi hai kuch bhi ho raha hai inn 10 dino mein hum zaroor darshan karne jaate hain,” she said.
Following Karisma’s recollections, actress Amruta Khanvilkar spoke about the unique emotional bond devotees share with Lord Ganesha. She noted that devotees often address Bappa with the informality normally reserved for close friends, brothers and family members.
“Bappa is the only god jisko hum apna friend bulate hai, bhai bulate hai, tu karke bulate hai,” Khanvilkar said, describing Lord Ganesha as a friend, brother and God who is deeply personal to devotees.
The special Ganesh Chaturthi episode of India’s Best Dancer Season 5 will air on Saturday and Sunday on Sony Entertainment Television and Sony LIV, celebrating the festive spirit through dance and music.
