Leaders across party lines on Thursday called for action against those allegedly raising slogans such as “Kashmir Mange Azadi” at Jadavpur University, with several NDA leaders urging the West Bengal government to identify those responsible and ensure strict punishment.
The demands came a day after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said anti-national forces and those insulting “saffron” would be uprooted from the state. Adhikari had made the remarks while leading a rally protesting alleged anti-national slogans and graffiti on the university campus.
BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal appealed to the state government to immediately identify those involved and take strict action against them.
JD(U) National General Secretary Shyam Rajak also backed Adhikari, saying a university should remain a “temple of education” and that strict action was warranted if such political activity took place on campus.
BJP leader and Bihar Minister Dilip Jaiswal said such incidents were not new and alleged that some individuals at Jadavpur University and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) had repeatedly engaged in politics contrary to what he described as the mainstream position in Bengal and the country.
Congress MP Akhilesh Singh, however, turned the criticism towards the BJP, saying the party had the government in the state and should take steps against such activities.
Trinamool Congress MLA Kunal Ghosh said Jadavpur University was among Bengal’s leading educational institutions and had a strong reputation for academic merit. He said people at the campus had also sung “Vande Mataram”, but acknowledged that there were differing views among students.
Ghosh said he was also opposed to slogans such as “Kashmir demands freedom”, describing them as “anti-India”, while cautioning that completely opposing campus politics would also be wrong.
Jadavpur University has been witnessing political tensions in recent weeks. Last month, clashes between activists of the CPI(M)-affiliated Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) triggered protests by both groups and further unrest on the campus.
The BJP subsequently organised a protest meeting outside the university, which was addressed by Adhikari.
