Senior AAP leader and Punjab in-charge Manish Sisodia on Thursday alleged that BJP leaders were stopped by villagers in Toor Banjara, Sangrur, when they reached the village in connection with the death of Gulzar Singh, accusing the BJP of trying to turn the grief of a Dalit family into a political issue.
Sisodia said villagers surrounded Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon and raised slogans against him, alleging that he was not allowed to enter the village.
“BJP tried to do politics over the pain of a poor Dalit family in Punjab, but the villagers showed them the mirror,” Sisodia said in a post on X.
He alleged that Dhillon had reached the village to gain political mileage from the situation, but villagers protested his presence.
Punjab Cabinet Minister and senior AAP leader Dr Balbir Singh also accused the BJP of engaging in what he termed “opportunistic politics” over Gulzar Singh’s death.
“Without caring about the pain of the family drowned in grief over the death of Gulzar Singh, the BJP leaders reached the village to do politics over his dead body. The people of Punjab immediately sent them back and exposed their opportunistic politics,” Dr Balbir Singh said.
He further targeted BJP leaders Kewal Singh Dhillon, Ashwani Sharma, Sunil Jakhar and Manpreet Badal, saying they should remember that people in Punjab do not accept attempts to turn a family tragedy into a political spectacle.
“Those who see a political opportunity instead of sympathy in a moment of grief, what kind of politics will they teach the people of Punjab?” Dr Balbir Singh asked.
He added that Punjab would not accept what he described as the “disgraceful mindset” of doing politics over a death.
The allegations come amid political reactions to Gulzar Singh’s death and the controversy surrounding the circumstances of the incident. AAP leaders said the family’s grief should be respected rather than becoming the backdrop for political confrontation.
