UN Map Showing Arunachal Pradesh, Aksai Chin as Separate Regions Draws Strong Reactions

New Delhi, September 10, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Strong reactions emerged on Thursday after a new United Nations map depicted Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin as separate regions positioned between the respective “claim lines” of India and China, with political leaders and experts calling the representation unacceptable.

Several voices urged the Centre to lodge a formal protest with the UN and asked the global organisation to take note of India’s position that Aksai Chin is part of its territory and under illegal Chinese occupation.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police S.P. Vaid said India should once again raise the matter at the UN and file a protest.

“These are our territories. The entirety of Jammu and Kashmir belongs to India. Aksai Chin is also part of India and has been illegally occupied by China, UN should take a note of this,” Vaid said.

Foreign affairs expert K.P. Fabian also said it would be appropriate for India to protest against the map.

BJP spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo described the depiction as “extremely objectionable”, asserting that Arunachal Pradesh, Aksai Chin and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir are integral parts of India and should not be portrayed separately.

“This is not a mistake. There are some kind of insane people who sometimes show Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh as separate regions and also depict Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, which is a part of India, as a part of that (Pakistan’s) country,” he said.

Shah Deo added that the Ministry of External Affairs had flagged the “anomalies” in the new world map.

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari said China had its eyes on Arunachal Pradesh and a large part of Ladakh, including Aksai Chin. He termed the UN map erroneous and said it undermined India’s sovereignty.

“We do not accept it,” Tiwari said, urging the Indian government to strongly oppose the depiction. He added that failing to do so could create an impression that the government was “scared of China”.

Samajwadi Party Maharashtra President Abu Azmi also opposed the depiction of Arunachal Pradesh as separate from India.

“This is a grave injustice to the country. Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India… depicting it as a separate region is extremely wrong,” Azmi said.

He appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to focus on protecting India’s territorial interests rather than issues related to Hindus and Muslims.
