The BJP has welcomed the upcoming memoir of Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, but with a pointed caveat: the book should candidly reflect what the party calls the truth about the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) years.
BJP MLA Ram Kadam congratulated Sonia Gandhi on her forthcoming book, Belonging: A Journey of Love, while saying he hoped it would also address the functioning of the government during former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s tenure from 2004 to 2014.
Speaking to IANS, Kadam said he expected the memoir to discuss his allegation that the Prime Minister had functioned as a “puppet” with the “remote control” operated from 10 Janpath, Sonia Gandhi’s residence. He also said the book should address corruption allegations relating to that period and alleged attempts by those in power to serve their own interests rather than the public.
“Everybody writes good things but if Sonia Gandhi writes the truth, it would definitely be welcomed,” Kadam said.
The memoir is scheduled to be published on November 10 by Alfred A. Knopf. According to the publisher’s announcement, Belonging: A Journey of Love will chronicle Sonia Gandhi’s journey from a small town in Italy to a position of influence in Indian politics, while exploring the personal experiences of love, bereavement and political duty that shaped her life.
The Congress has highlighted the personal hardships and political challenges reflected in Gandhi’s journey.
Congress leader Pawan Khera said there was considerable anticipation for the book in India and abroad, describing it as more than a conventional autobiography.
“This is not just a book; it is a journey, a travelogue of life,” Khera told IANS, pointing to the personal losses Gandhi endured, including the deaths of two members of her family, as well as the challenges she faced during her political career.
Khera also credited Gandhi with what he described as a significant contribution to keeping the country united.
The contrasting reactions from the BJP and Congress have already given the forthcoming memoir a political dimension ahead of its publication.
