India’s Sheetal Devi and Toman Kumar set a new world record in the para compound mixed team event at the 2026 Asian Para Games, producing a record-breaking performance in the ranking round at Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square on Monday.
The Indian pair amassed 1,402 points to surpass the previous world record of 1,400, which had been set earlier this year by Sheetal and Rakesh Kumar at the World Para Archery Series in Ahmedabad.
The score also comfortably eclipsed the Asian Para Games record of 1,382 set by China at the 2023 Hangzhou Games.
Toman contributed 698 points from a possible 720 in the men’s compound ranking round, while Sheetal scored 704 in the women’s ranking round. Sheetal’s individual score also equalled the world record and established a new Asian record.
The performance placed the Indian duo among the leading contenders for gold in the mixed team final.
Sheetal topped the women’s individual qualification with 704 points, finishing ahead of Singapore’s Nur Syahidah Alim (683) and China’s Xueqing Xu (680).
In the men’s compound ranking round, Toman finished third with a personal-best score of 698. China’s Yicheng Zhang topped the standings with 708 points, setting a new Asian record, while compatriot Xinliang Ai was second with 704.
Sheetal, who won individual compound gold at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, went on to claim bronze at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. She is also a world champion and has established herself among the leading archers in the discipline at a young age.
Toman is also a world champion in the men’s compound individual category and holds the No. 1 world ranking in his classification.
