Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced plans to give one SpaceX share to every child in the United States next year, although he has yet to disclose how the proposed distribution would work.
Musk, the chief executive of SpaceX, made the announcement in a post on social media platform X on Monday, describing it as the first of several such initiatives.
“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many,” he wrote.
Musk remains the largest shareholder in the privately held aerospace company. According to a recent regulatory filing, he held a 48.4 per cent stake in SpaceX as of June 30.
The filing listed approximately 6.42 billion shares associated with his holdings, including shares held directly and through trusts, as well as stock options. His ownership includes Class A and Class B shares, along with restricted shares.
However, Musk did not specify the eligibility criteria for children, the proposed timeline, the mechanism for transferring the shares or whether the plan would involve a trust structure. Details regarding regulatory requirements and the practical implementation of the initiative also remain unclear.
SpaceX operates across several areas of the space industry, including commercial rocket launches, human spaceflight and Starlink satellite internet services. The company is among the world’s most valuable privately held businesses.
Separately, Musk recently showcased a new version of Tesla’s Roadster sports car at a SpaceX facility in Texas. Videos shared on social media showed a prototype travelling along an elevated, curved track before briefly becoming airborne and landing safely.
The demonstration drew comparisons with flying-car concepts and renewed attention to the Roadster project, which was first announced nearly a decade ago.
