Imphal, October 19, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
One person was killed and several others injured in clashes between members of two communities in Manipur’s Thoubal district, prompting authorities to impose prohibitory orders in two affected areas, police said on Monday.
The violence erupted at Khangabok village, under Thoubal police station and around 25 km south of Imphal, on Sunday night. According to police, a group allegedly pelted stones at a ground where a music concert was being held, triggering clashes that spread to neighbouring Sangaiyumpham.
Stones were thrown during the confrontation, while several houses and vehicles were reportedly set on fire. Amid the violence, unidentified miscreants opened fire, hitting Laishram Rakesh in the head. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died, police said.
Several other people sustained minor injuries after being struck by stones and were admitted to a hospital for treatment.
Additional state and central security personnel were deployed in the affected villages to prevent further escalation. Police said the situation was under control on Monday morning.
The Thoubal district magistrate issued prohibitory orders on Sunday night under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), directing residents of Khangabok and Sangaiyumpham not to leave their homes from 11 p.m. The order cited the risk of a breach of peace and threats to human life and property. It did not specify when the restrictions would be lifted.
Separately, more than 25 houses were reportedly set ablaze in Manipur’s Kamjong district over the preceding 24 hours, with suspected militants targeting areas inhabited by Naga and Kuki communities, according to police inputs.
Around 14 abandoned houses belonging to Naga residents were set on fire by unidentified miscreants in Pilong and Skipe villages near the India-Myanmar border on Sunday. The houses had reportedly been deserted following earlier attacks.
Additional security forces were deployed after the incidents. The violence also forced civilians to flee their homes and seek shelter in forests and a nearby security camp.
