Opposition parties in Maharashtra have launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Mahayuti government over the state’s law and order situation following a shooting incident targeting Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff’s vehicle in Mumbai and the recent killing of Shiv Sena (UBT) functionary Pradip Purnekar in Thane.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Monday demanded President’s rule in Maharashtra, alleging that the state’s law and order machinery had collapsed. He also criticised Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who holds the Home portfolio, over what he described as a failure to control rising crime.
NCP (SP) working president and MP Supriya Sule described the incident involving Shroff’s vehicle as alarming, saying reports of criminals using weapons and opening fire in public places had left citizens worried about their safety. She urged the Home Department to review the situation and take immediate corrective measures.
Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal accused the Mahayuti government of allowing a “jungle raj” to prevail. He questioned how ordinary citizens could feel safe if a prominent actor could be targeted in broad daylight and called on Fadnavis to accept moral responsibility and resign.
NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar also linked the latest incident to Purnekar’s killing in Thane, questioning the security of ordinary residents when prominent public figures were allegedly vulnerable to violence. He urged the government to improve policing or hand over the Home portfolio to a competent minister.
Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar called for a thorough investigation and strict action against those responsible, demanding concrete steps from the Home Department rather than assurances. Congress leader Sachin Sawant also cited previous high-profile incidents in Mumbai to argue that public safety had deteriorated.
The opposition’s criticism has intensified pressure on the state government to demonstrate that it can curb criminal activity and restore public confidence.
Fadnavis has reportedly spoken to the Mumbai Police Commissioner and directed authorities to expedite the investigation into the firing incident. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who met Shroff at his residence, also assured strict action against the perpetrators. Deputy CM Sunetra Pawar said those responsible would be apprehended and that protecting Mumbai residents remained a priority.
