A Primary Agriculture Credit Society (PACS) president was shot dead and the husband of a block chief was critically injured after four unidentified assailants opened fire in Bihar’s Maner area, near Patna, police said.
The shooting took place on Sunday night in Byapur village, under the jurisdiction of Maner police station. The deceased was identified as Sanjit Kumar, alias Bhalu, who headed the local PACS. Pintu Kumar, husband of Maner block chief Rinki Devi, sustained a gunshot wound and is undergoing treatment.
According to preliminary information, the two men were sitting in the courtyard of Sanjit Kumar’s residence when the attackers arrived on two motorcycles and opened fire. Sanjit Kumar was allegedly targeted first. Pintu Kumar was also shot when he attempted to intervene.
Local residents rushed the injured men to a private hospital in Danapur. Sanjit Kumar later died during treatment, while Pintu Kumar remained in critical condition.
Maner police reached the village after receiving information about the incident and launched an investigation. Danapur DSP-2 Amarendra Kumar Jha also visited the spot to review the case.
Jha said Sanjit Kumar had sustained a bullet wound to the chest, while Pintu Kumar was shot in the thigh. Police are examining CCTV footage to identify the assailants and establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.
According to the DSP, preliminary findings indicate that longstanding enmity and electoral rivalry could be possible motives. However, the motive has not been conclusively established.
The attackers fled after the shooting. Police are working to identify and arrest them as the investigation continues. The incident triggered panic in Byapur and neighbouring areas, where residents gathered after learning about the firing.
