Yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Monday said demands for a change of government and other political activities must follow constitutional and democratic procedures, warning against attempts to alter or remove constitutional office-holders through street protests.

Speaking to reporters in Haridwar amid the ongoing ‘regime change’ debate, Ramdev said India had an established constitutional framework that all political parties must respect, including procedures for appointing and removing the Chief Election Commissioner.

“You cannot run constitutional institutions from the streets, nor can you appoint someone to a position or remove someone from a post through street protests,” he said.

Ramdev acknowledged that shortcomings existed across institutions and sectors, including the legislature, judiciary, media, education and healthcare. He said protests and reforms both had a role in addressing these concerns.

He also commented on the emergence of civil society groups and individuals who gain public attention when people begin questioning both the ruling establishment and the opposition.

Referring to the CJP organisation, Ramdev said its character, contribution and credibility were yet to be assessed. He noted that some young people were joining the group and expressed hope that they would raise relevant issues and work for the interests of the country and its youth.

Separately, Ramdev expressed condolences to the families of those killed in the stampede at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal. He prayed for strength for the bereaved families to cope with their loss and stressed the need for adequate safety arrangements at religious gatherings.

He called for comprehensive security measures at Durga Puja pandals, including proper firefighting facilities, particularly at venues where ceremonial lamps are lit and large crowds assemble.

Ramdev also spoke about the spiritual significance of respecting women in the Sanatan tradition, saying the divine was revered in every form of existence rather than being confined to young girls.

He said this outlook should encourage purity in thought and conduct, leaving no room for misconduct, immorality or corruption.
