Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday vowed strict action against criminal gangs operating from outside the country following the firing incident involving Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff, saying Mumbai Police would pursue both the alleged shooters and their masterminds.
Fadnavis said the police had identified important leads in the case and were working with central intelligence agencies to track networks allegedly operating beyond Maharashtra’s borders.
“The police will find the accused, and their masterminds have also been found. Therefore, I can say with certainty that such incidents will not be tolerated. The Mumbai Police will definitely track down the accused. No one can openly challenge the police,” the Chief Minister said.
He described those allegedly carrying out attacks on behalf of people operating from concealed locations as cowards and said the police would act against the wider network.
Fadnavis acknowledged that investigating groups believed to be operating from abroad posed particular challenges, adding that coordination with central agencies was underway. He said the government would not tolerate threats to public safety, whether directed at celebrities or ordinary citizens.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also condemned the attack, describing it as deeply unfortunate. He visited Shroff at his residence to enquire about his well-being and said the incident had caused considerable anxiety within the actor’s family, particularly his mother, Ayesha Shroff.
Shinde said Mumbai Police Commissioner had been instructed to review security arrangements for actors and other members of the film industry. He warned that attempts by criminal gangs to intimidate celebrities would not be tolerated.
Recalling the crackdown on Mumbai’s gang wars during the 1990s, Shinde said the government would take firm action against anyone attempting to create fear through similar criminal activities.
He also urged people receiving threat calls or messages from criminal gangs to report them to Mumbai Police, assuring them that the government stood behind the film industry.
The firing incident occurred on the evening of October 18 in Mumbai’s Juhu area. According to the complaint, unidentified assailants opened fire at a vehicle carrying Shroff, injuring his caretaker and driver, Firdos Ibrahim Baloch. Police have registered a case and formed a special team to identify and apprehend those involved.
