Karnataka Police are investigating the alleged links of arrested suspected terrorist Mamtaz Mallik with individuals of Pakistani origin and suspected members of terrorist organisations operating from Pakistan, officials said on Monday.

Mallik, a youth from West Bengal, was arrested by investigating agencies in Kalaburagi, north Karnataka, on Sunday. The Brahmapura police have registered a case and are examining his alleged connections with terrorist organisations and individuals suspected of involvement in anti-India activities.

Chowk Police Inspector Susheel Kumar lodged a complaint at Brahmapura police station, following which an FIR was registered under Sections 113(3) and 197(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to preliminary findings cited by police, Mallik allegedly maintained contact with individuals and groups suspected of links to terrorist outfits through WhatsApp and Instagram.

Investigators said Mallik was a member of a WhatsApp group named ‘Imam Mahdi’. During questioning, he reportedly told investigators that a person identified as Jainul Abdin, allegedly based in Pakistan, had added him to the group.

Police are examining information suggesting that Abdin may be associated with the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) as a commander. The alleged connection is being investigated, and its nature and extent have yet to be established.

Investigators also found that Mallik allegedly followed Instagram accounts named ‘Kashmir Tiger 313’, ‘I Love Pakistan, I Love Kashmir’ and ‘Major_Iqbal_ISI’. Police are examining his reported online activity, including engagement with videos and reels related to Pakistan.

Photographs and videos stored on Mallik’s mobile phone are also being examined as part of the investigation. Police are collecting digital evidence to verify the leads, establish his alleged contacts and determine whether he had any direct involvement in activities linked to terrorist organisations.

The investigation is continuing, and the allegations against Mallik have not been established in court.
