Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended his best wishes to India’s para-athletes as the Asian Para Games 2026 officially opened in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, with an opening ceremony at Nagoya’s Paloma Mizuho Stadium.
In a message on X, Modi praised the athletes’ dedication and determination, expressing pride in their achievements and encouraging them to compete with confidence.
“As the Asian Para Games 2026 begin in Aichi-Nagoya, conveying my best wishes to the Indian contingent,” the Prime Minister wrote.
“India is immensely proud of our phenomenal para-athletes. Their grit, dedication and indomitable spirit inspire 140 crore Indians. May they compete with confidence and give their very best,” he added.
Para-badminton star Pramod Bhagat and para-athlete Simran Sharma carried the Indian flag during the opening ceremony, leading the country’s delegation into the stadium.
The Indian contingent also drew attention for its ceremonial attire. Athletes and officials wore deep blue blazers featuring golden motifs inspired by the Indus Valley Civilisation, including representations of the Priest-King sculpture, the Dancing Girl figurine and ancient seals.
India has sent a 281-member contingent, comprising 168 athletes — 112 men and 56 women — who will compete across 11 disciplines. The team will aim to build on the country’s performances at previous editions and secure medals across a range of para-sports.
Ahead of the ceremony, India’s para-athletics head coach Satyanarayana said the athletes were in positive spirits and ready to translate their preparations into results. He identified para athletics as a key part of the medal campaign.
“We are targeting around 100 medals for India, and we believe our athletes have the ability and determination to achieve this,” he said.
The coach also expressed hopes of winning six medals in athletics on the first day of competition, including two to three gold medals. He highlighted high-jumper Nishad Kumar’s form, saying the team hoped he would produce a personal best and potentially break the Games record.
Satyanarayana acknowledged that competition would be tough, with leading athletes from across Asia participating, but said the Indian team was focused on performing to its potential.
The Asian Para Games run until October 24, with India seeking a strong showing across all 11 disciplines.
