A 69-year-old man died after falling into an 8- to 10-foot-deep excavation pit dug for a drainage line project in Pune’s Yerawada area, police said on Sunday.
The deceased, identified as Pradeep Pardeshi, a resident of Yerawada, fell into the pit near Chitra Chowk vegetable market at around 12.30 pm on October 17. The excavation was part of drainage work being carried out by the Pune Municipal Corporation.
According to police, Pardeshi was walking along the road when an autorickshaw passing nearby allegedly brushed against him, causing him to lose his balance and fall into the pit.
He was rushed to Shubhankar Hospital in Yerawada for treatment but succumbed to his injuries later that evening.
Senior Police Inspector Yuvraj Nandre of Laxmi Nagar Police Station said drainage work had been underway at the site for around 15 days. He added that barricades had been installed around the excavation as a precautionary measure.
Police received information about the death through a medico-legal case intimation on the morning of October 18. Nandre said the initial information suggested that a vehicle had skidded and fallen into the pit, prompting police to make preliminary inquiries.
Investigators subsequently contacted Pardeshi’s family to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. According to Nandre, the family informed police that they would visit the station after completing the last rites and lodge a formal complaint.
No formal complaint had been registered in the case at the time of the police statement. Further action is expected after the family submits its complaint, police said.
The incident has raised concerns over safety around excavation sites during ongoing civic infrastructure work, although police said barricades had been installed at the location.
