The Punjab government will bear the entire cost of treatment for workers injured after a speeding car rammed into a group of labourers in Sangrur district, while the families of each deceased worker will receive Rs 2 lakh in financial assistance, Cabinet Minister Harpal Singh Cheema announced on Monday.
Cheema and Cabinet Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal visited injured workers at hospitals following the accident on Sunday evening, in which eight workers, including six women, were killed and 12 others injured near Alisher village on the Jakhal-Lehra road.
The workers were taking a break when the out-of-control car ploughed into them. The injured are being treated at hospitals in Sangrur and Patiala. Officials said seven were admitted to the Civil Hospital in Sangrur and four to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala, while the remaining injured were receiving treatment elsewhere.
After meeting the victims, Cheema said their condition was generally stable and doctors expected them to need another four to five days of treatment.
“The entire cost of treatment will be borne by the Punjab government,” he said, adding that Rs 2 lakh would be provided to the family of each worker who died in the accident.
Goyal described the incident as tragic, noting that the victims were labourers working under the VB-G RAM G scheme to earn a livelihood. He said the administration had been responding to the incident since Sunday evening.
According to Goyal, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who is currently in France, called him to enquire about the situation and directed the government to support the affected families.
Punjab Congress president Pargat Singh also expressed grief over the deaths and appealed for restraint in the aftermath of the tragedy.
Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla, meanwhile, raised questions about visits to the affected area, arguing that authorities should also focus on broader security concerns in Punjab, including alleged cross-border movement of drones and narcotics and attacks on police personnel.
The accident has triggered calls for support for the affected families, with the state government assuring medical and financial assistance.
