Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Indian shooters Mona Agarwal and Avani Lekhara after they won gold and silver medals, respectively, in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event at the 2026 Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Mona clinched gold with a score of 250, setting a new Asian Para Games record, while Avani secured silver with 249.6. South Korea’s Yunri Lee took bronze with 227.9 at the Aichi Prefectural General Shooting Gallery.
In a message shared by the Prime Minister’s Office on X, Modi praised Mona’s precision, determination and composure, calling her record-breaking performance a special achievement for India on the opening day of the Games.
He also congratulated Avani, commending her consistency and determination and wishing her success in future competitions.
Mona staged an impressive comeback in the final after being placed fifth before moving into the medal positions and holding off her rivals to secure the title.
Her score surpassed Avani’s previous Asian Para Games record of 249.6, set when she won gold at the Hangzhou edition. Mona narrowly missed the world record of 252, held by Slovakia’s Iryna Shchetnik.
The result also carried significance for the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympic Games. Avani secured a quota place through her performance, while Mona had already earned her quota at the World Championships last month.
The medals marked a strong start for India’s shooting contingent at the continental para-sport event.
