Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani, 98, was discharged from Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in New Delhi on Monday after showing improvement during treatment for a chest infection, the hospital said.
Advani was admitted to the hospital on October 16 and received treatment under the supervision of Dr Vinit Suri, senior consultant in neurology.
“Mr L.K. Advani, who was admitted to Apollo Hospitals on 16th October with a chest infection, is being discharged today. He has been under the care of Dr Vinit Suri, Senior Consultant – Neurology and has shown improvement in his medical status,” the hospital said in a statement.
The former Deputy Prime Minister was admitted to the hospital’s pulmonary department at around 7.30 pm on October 16. Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda visited him on Saturday and enquired about his health.
Advani has experienced health-related hospitalisations in recent years. He was admitted to Apollo Hospital in May 2026 due to age-related complications and was discharged after receiving medical care. In December 2024, he was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit for medical management and investigations. His condition was reported to be stable at the time.
Born on November 8, 1927, in Karachi, now in Pakistan, Advani is among the BJP’s most prominent leaders and played a major role in the party’s expansion into a major national political force.
He served as BJP president on multiple occasions and led the Ram Rath Yatra in 1990, a campaign that became a significant turning point in Indian politics. Advani was Deputy Prime Minister from 2002 to 2004 in the government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee and also held key portfolios, including Home Affairs.
In recognition of his contribution to public life, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, in 2024. He received the Padma Vibhushan in 2015.
