For 20-year-old cricketer Kirandeep Singh, the upcoming Sher-e-Punjab T20 League represents an opportunity to turn an early endorsement from India captain Shubman Gill into performances on a bigger stage.
Kirandeep, who was spotted by Gill while playing tennis-ball cricket, was bought by the Fazilka Falcons for Rs 20,000 at the league auction. Gill is set to captain the team, giving the youngster an opportunity to share the dressing room with the player who first encouraged him to pursue cricket seriously.
“When someone like Shubman Gill believes in you and gives you advice, it gives you a lot of confidence. His words have motivated me to work harder and keep improving,” Kirandeep said.
“Now that I have the opportunity to play alongside him, I want to learn as much as possible and prove that his faith in me was justified,” he added.
Kirandeep’s rise has been rooted in modest beginnings. He started playing at the government school ground in Cholta Kalan and said he had never expected to get such an opportunity so early in his career.
“Coming from Cholta Kalan and playing at the government school ground, I never imagined that I would get an opportunity like this so early in my career. The Sher-e-Punjab T20 League is a big platform for me, and I want to make the most of it,” he said.
The youngster also sees the tournament as a chance to learn from Gill and other experienced players in the Fazilka Falcons squad, particularly about preparation, handling pressure and responding to different match situations.
“I will try to learn something from every player around me,” Kirandeep said.
For him, the league is therefore more than a debut. It is a chance to convert early recognition into competitive performances and establish himself in Punjab cricket.
The Sher-e-Punjab T20 League is scheduled to begin on August 30, with Kirandeep hoping to make the most of the opportunity created by Gill’s early faith in his abilities.
