India on Friday described the removal of unauthorised temporary structures outside the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi as “proportionate action”, following Pakistan’s decision to remove structures outside the Indian High Commission in Islamabad despite New Delhi’s objections.
Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the structures removed in Islamabad had been intended to facilitate parking outside the Indian mission.
“In Pakistan, some structures in front of the Indian High Commission, which were meant to facilitate parking, were removed. Despite our request to them not to do so, they went ahead with it. In response, we took what could be described as a proportionate action,” Jaiswal said during the MEA’s weekly media briefing.
He said temporary structures in the lane where the Pakistan High Commission is located in New Delhi were subsequently removed.
Authorities had earlier demolished a section of structures and barricades outside the Pakistan High Commission, saying they stood beyond the mission’s approved boundary. The exercise was carried out with the help of a JCB machine and also involved removing queue-management installations near the visa section.
Traffic bollards and barricades surrounding the mission were also removed, effectively dismantling the external security arrangement along the lane outside the diplomatic compound.
The action came three days after Pakistani authorities reportedly removed protective security barricades outside the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.
The developments occurred amid a fresh diplomatic exchange over Jammu and Kashmir after US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor visited the Union Territory on Wednesday. During his visit, Gor said the US would reconsider its travel advisories for Jammu and Kashmir and described the region as “an important part of India”.
Following his remarks, Pakistan summoned the US Charge d’Affaires in Islamabad and lodged a demarche.
India has consistently maintained that Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh are integral and inalienable parts of the country. The MEA has also previously said that the international community should focus on alleged atrocities in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and the use of the territory for cross-border terrorism.
