India’s men’s and women’s hockey teams face formidable tests against the Netherlands as they begin their respective second-stage campaigns at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, with the race for the semi-finals entering a crucial phase.
The Netherlands, Olympic champions in both men’s and women’s hockey at Paris 2024, will provide a stern challenge for the Indian sides, who will be looking to make strong starts in the decisive stage of the tournament.
The Indian women’s team will take on co-hosts Netherlands on Friday at 9:30 pm IST in their opening Pool E match at the Wagener Stadium.
India advanced to the second stage unbeaten. They began with a 6-1 victory over South Africa before playing out a goalless draw against England. An earlier draw against China saw India progress from Pool D alongside their fellow Asian side.
India and China will carry one point each into Pool E after their draw in the opening stage. The points could prove important as the teams compete for the top two positions in Pool E, with the leading two teams from Pools E and F advancing to the semi-finals.
India will next face Australia on August 23 at 10:30 pm IST.
The Indian women have shown a combination of attacking efficiency and defensive resilience in the tournament so far. Their emphatic win against South Africa demonstrated their ability to convert chances, while the clean sheet against England reflected their ability to withstand sustained pressure.
The Netherlands, however, will offer a significantly tougher challenge, combining home support with the experience and quality of a team accustomed to competing for major international honours.
The Indian men will begin their second-stage campaign against the Netherlands on August 22 at 7:30 pm IST before taking on Argentina on August 24 at 6:15 pm IST.
Unlike the women, the Indian men will enter the second stage without carrying any points from Pool D. England, who remained unbeaten and defeated India 4-2, topped the pool and advanced with the advantage of points carried forward.
India finished second after beating Pakistan 5-3, following an opening 3-1 victory over Wales. The win over Pakistan provided a strong finish to their pool campaign, with India displaying greater attacking fluency.
The second stage, however, presents a fresh challenge against a technically accomplished and tactically disciplined Netherlands side.
With both Indian teams opening their second-stage campaigns against the reigning Olympic champions, the matches will provide a major test of their ability to compete at the highest level. Results in the coming fixtures could have a decisive impact on their hopes of reaching the semi-finals.
