Chandigarh, August 20, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday staged a protest outside the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation office over waterlogging, inadequate drainage and the deteriorating condition of roads across the city.
The demonstration was led by AAP Chandigarh President Vijaypal Singh and was attended by party councillors and other leaders. In a symbolic protest, the party leaders brought a boat outside the civic body office to highlight the extent of waterlogging following recent rainfall.
Targeting the BJP-led civic administration, the AAP questioned its handling of the city’s infrastructure and demanded accountability for public expenditure.
“After being in control of Chandigarh’s civic administration for so many years, what has the BJP actually done for the city, and where has the taxpayers’ money gone?” the party asked.
AAP leaders said the recent rainfall had exposed shortcomings in the city’s monsoon preparedness and drainage infrastructure. According to the party, several major roads and low-lying areas were inundated, while prolonged traffic disruptions left commuters stranded for hours. It also claimed that vehicles caught in flooded stretches suffered engine failures.
The party questioned why Chandigarh continues to experience extensive waterlogging despite years of spending on drainage infrastructure, storm-water drains, cleaning and maintenance. It demanded that the Municipal Corporation and the administration publicly disclose expenditure on these works and explain why the results remain inadequate.
The AAP said the problem extended beyond waterlogging, with traffic jams, stranded vehicles and commuters facing significant disruption in reaching their homes and workplaces.
The party also raised concerns over reports of roads sinking and breaking at several locations after the rainfall. It questioned the quality of road construction and drainage works and demanded an independent technical audit of affected roads and drainage infrastructure.
AAP leaders further sought complete disclosure of expenditure and construction-quality details for projects undertaken with public funds by the BJP-led Municipal Corporation.
The party also criticised the BJP’s political leadership, pointing out that Chandigarh has a BJP Mayor, the civic administration is led by the BJP and Delhi also has a BJP government. It alleged that despite the disruption caused by flooded roads and traffic breakdowns, accountability for the situation remained unclear.
