South Africa T20I captain Aiden Markram has played down speculation that he could take over as Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) captain, saying the franchise has several capable leaders and the final decision rests with the team management.
The leadership position at LSG became vacant after Rishabh Pant stepped down from the role in May following the franchise’s bottom-place finish in IPL 2026. Pant was later traded to Delhi Capitals in exchange for left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
Markram, who has previously led teams owned by the RPSG Group in South Africa’s SA20 and England’s The Hundred, is considered among the possible candidates for the LSG captaincy role. However, the South African batter said he has not focused on the possibility.
“I’ve got no idea. They can decide whatever they think is best. There’s some quality leaders in that group that we have there, so I’m not too fussed about it. Whoever gets it I’m sure will take it on and do a good job, but the thoughts haven’t been there just yet,” Markram was quoted as saying.
Apart from Markram, Australia’s T20I captain Mitchell Marsh and former West Indies skipper Nicholas Pooran are also among the leadership options available with LSG. The franchise could additionally look for alternatives during the upcoming IPL mini-auction.
Markram also reflected on his captaincy experience in the 100-ball format, crediting England star Jos Buttler for his guidance. He said leading in The Hundred has been challenging but enjoyable due to the quality of competition and support from experienced players.
The South African also spoke about his recent return to form after scoring a half-century following a difficult run with the bat. Although the innings came in a losing cause, Markram said he was pleased to regain rhythm and hoped to build on the performance.
