The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Thursday arrested the officer in charge of the Women Police Station in Jharkhand’s Khunti district after she was allegedly caught accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000.
According to officials, Sulekha Kumari Sapna was apprehended by the Ranchi unit of the ACB during a trap operation conducted following a complaint alleging that she had demanded money in connection with an ongoing investigation.
The ACB said the complainant alleged that the police officer had sought the bribe in exchange for removing the name of an accused from a case related to human trafficking and child labour registered at the Women Police Station and for extending relief during the investigation.
Instead of paying the amount, the complainant approached the ACB’s Ranchi unit. After conducting a preliminary verification, the bureau found prima facie evidence supporting the allegations and planned a trap.
As part of the operation, the complainant allegedly handed over the marked currency notes to the officer on Thursday. ACB personnel, who were stationed nearby in plain clothes, immediately intervened and arrested her while she was allegedly accepting the bribe.
Following the arrest, Sulekha Kumari Sapna was taken to the ACB headquarters in Ranchi for questioning. Officials said a case has been registered against her under the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, while further investigation is underway.
The bureau said it is also examining related documents and other aspects connected with the case. After completion of the interrogation, the accused officer will be produced before the competent court.
The Khunti Women Police Station has previously faced corruption allegations. In 2021, its then officer-in-charge, Meera Kumari, was arrested by the ACB in a separate bribery case.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau has appealed to the public to report any instance of government officials demanding bribes, assuring that complaints would be investigated confidentially and appropriate legal action taken.
