A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck southwestern Japan on Tuesday, prompting authorities to issue tsunami advisories for parts of the region.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the earthquake occurred at 4:27 p.m. local time in Kumamoto Prefecture at a depth of 10 kilometres.
Following the quake, tsunami advisories were issued for the Ariake Sea and the Yatsushiro Sea, with authorities urging residents in coastal areas to remain alert and follow official safety instructions.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage. Authorities are monitoring the situation and assessing the impact of the earthquake.
Japan is among the world’s most earthquake-prone countries due to its location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where several tectonic plates converge. The country maintains one of the world’s most advanced earthquake monitoring and early warning systems.
The latest quake comes just over a month after a series of strong tremors struck different parts of Japan. On June 26, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake in Yamanashi Prefecture left 10 people with minor injuries. That quake registered lower 6 on Japan’s seven-point seismic intensity scale in Fujikawaguchiko Town, prompting concerns about possible volcanic activity around Mount Fuji. However, the JMA later confirmed that no abnormalities had been detected in the volcano’s activity.
Earlier, on June 25, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Iwate Prefecture, with tremors felt across several regions, including Tokyo. No tsunami warning was issued following that earthquake.
Authorities have advised residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant as aftershocks are possible.
