AIMIM spokesperson Waris Pathan has opposed any proposal to make the recitation of Vande Mataram compulsory, arguing that while his party respects the national song, compelling its recitation would violate the constitutional right to freedom of religion.
His remarks come in the wake of the introduction of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026 in the Rajya Sabha on July 24. The proposed legislation seeks to accord Vande Mataram the same statutory and legal protection currently enjoyed by the National Anthem.
Speaking to IANS, Pathan said AIMIM has always respected Vande Mataram but maintained that certain portions of the song conflict with Islamic beliefs and therefore cannot be recited by Muslims.
Referring to Article 25 of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of religion, Pathan asserted that no citizen should be compelled to recite words that contradict their faith. He argued that respect for the nation should not be equated with mandatory recitation of the national song.
Questioning the consequences of refusing to recite Vande Mataram, Pathan criticised what he described as attempts by the BJP and the RSS to intimidate people over the issue. He said patriotism cannot be judged solely by whether an individual recites the national song.
The AIMIM leader also distinguished between the National Anthem and the National Song, stating that his party fully respects and sings Jana Gana Mana while saluting the National Flag. He maintained that making Vande Mataram compulsory would be unconstitutional and inconsistent with democratic principles.
Pathan further alleged that Muslims are often unfairly portrayed as unpatriotic for declining to recite portions of the song that they believe conflict with their religious beliefs. He also highlighted the contributions and sacrifices made by members of the Muslim community during India’s freedom struggle, saying these should not be overlooked in debates over nationalism.
