Punjab Cabinet Minister for Jails Dr. Ravjot Singh on Monday inaugurated an Aam Aadmi Clinic at the Central Jail in Hoshiarpur, saying the initiative reflects the state government’s commitment to ensuring quality healthcare services for every citizen, including prison inmates.
The newly established facility, inaugurated by an inmate, is the 77th Aam Aadmi Clinic in Hoshiarpur district and takes the total number of such clinics in Punjab to 1,090.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Ravjot Singh said the Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government has significantly expanded the state’s primary healthcare network by providing free medical consultations, diagnostic services and medicines through Aam Aadmi Clinics.
He said patients visiting the clinics are entitled to 45 types of diagnostic tests and more than 100 essential medicines free of cost.
The minister said the government has now established Aam Aadmi Clinics in eight jails across Punjab to strengthen healthcare services for inmates. The newly opened clinic at Hoshiarpur Central Jail is expected to benefit more than 1,400 inmates by providing routine health check-ups, diagnostic tests and medicines within the prison premises.
Each Aam Aadmi Clinic is staffed with a Medical Officer, Pharmacist, Clinic Assistant and Helper to ensure the delivery of primary healthcare services, he added.
Highlighting the impact of the initiative, Dr. Ravjot Singh said nearly 5.90 crore people have availed healthcare services at Aam Aadmi Clinics across Punjab so far, while over 3.50 crore diagnostic tests have been conducted.
He said the earlier network of 990 clinics catered to around 83,000 patients daily, and the expansion to 1,090 clinics would enable more people to access affordable and quality healthcare closer to their homes.
The minister also said the clinics are providing antenatal care, screening services and dietary counselling for pregnant women. He added that the Punjab Government is considering setting up another 300 Aam Aadmi Clinics in the coming months to further strengthen the state’s healthcare infrastructure.
On the occasion, Jail Superintendent Harcharan Singh Gill and Civil Surgeon Dr. Mandeep Kamal briefed the minister on the facilities available at the newly established clinic and the healthcare arrangements at the Central Jail.
Additional Superintendent Harbans Singh, Deputy Superintendent Asha Rani, Urban Nodal Officer for Aam Aadmi Clinics Dr. Rohit Babuta, District Programme Manager (NHM) Mohammad Asif and other officials were also present.
