The Delhi government has reconstituted the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) and the Delhi Minorities Commission by appointing new chairpersons and members, in a move aimed at strengthening institutional support for women and minority communities across the national capital.
According to an official announcement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Lata Gupta has been appointed Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women. Shyam Bala, Malti Verma, Lata Sodhi, Sanrakshika Sharma Jha and Renu Bhalla have been appointed as members of the commission.
The CMO said the appointments are expected to enhance the functioning of the commission and improve access to justice, protection, assistance and empowerment initiatives for women. It noted that the commission plays a vital role in safeguarding women’s rights, ensuring their safety and promoting their dignity.
The Delhi government has also appointed Nirmal Jain as Chairman of the Delhi Minorities Commission. Kuldeep Singh and Mohammad Haroon have been named as members of the commission.
The Chief Minister’s Office said the appointments reflect the government’s commitment to protecting the rights, dignity and welfare of all sections of society while promoting social harmony and inclusive development.
The appointments come close on the heels of the National Commission for Women (NCW) launching a new toll-free women’s helpline, 14490, to provide immediate assistance to women in distress across the country. The NCW said the easy-to-remember number is intended to facilitate timely grievance redressal and improve access to support services.
Separately, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar recently participated in a leadership development programme for District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police in Lonavala, where she urged officials to implement a 10-point action plan focused on strengthening women’s safety and empowerment.
