India’s Anahat Singh scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win the World Junior Squash Championship after defeating Egypt’s Ruqayya Salem in the women’s final at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada.
The top-seeded Indian, currently ranked World No. 20, produced a dominant display to beat the second-seeded Egyptian 11-3, 11-7, 11-9 and clinch the biggest title of her career.
With the victory, Anahat also became the first non-Egyptian player to win the prestigious women’s junior world title since American Amanda Sobhy in 2010, ending Egypt’s 15-year dominance that began in 2011.
A day earlier, Anahat had become the first Indian in 21 years to reach the final of the World Junior Squash Championships after defeating Egypt’s Barb Sameh in the semifinals. She completed her remarkable campaign by overcoming another Egyptian opponent to lift the trophy.
The triumph marks another milestone in an outstanding season for the Indian teenager and reinforces her status as one of the country’s brightest squash prospects.
In the men’s event, Egypt’s top seed Mohamad Zakaria advanced to his fourth consecutive World Junior Championship final with a straight-games victory over compatriot Selfeldin Refaay. He will face second seed Adam Hawal, who progressed after Marwan Assal retired injured during their semifinal.
