Tension prevailed at Jadavpur University (JU) in south Kolkata after clashes broke out between activists of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) over a general body meeting of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students’ Union (FETSU).
The clashes occurred during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, leaving several students injured. Some of those injured are undergoing treatment at K.P.C. Medical College and Hospital.
The rival student organisations have traded allegations over the incident. The SFI alleged that the ABVP had been attempting to gain control of the university since the formation of the new government in West Bengal and accused it of bringing outsiders onto the campus and indulging in vandalism.
The ABVP, however, alleged that SFI activists, along with members of the Democratic Students’ Organisation (DSO), affiliated with the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), attacked its office-bearers inside the campus under the pretext of a general body meeting.
BJP MLA from Jadavpur Assembly constituency Sarbori Mukherjee visited the hospital on Thursday morning and met students injured in the clashes.
Both groups have lodged FIRs at Jadavpur Police Station and announced separate protest demonstrations on the campus on Thursday. No arrests had been made in connection with the clashes at the time of filing the report.
ABVP central working committee member Subhabrata Adhikari alleged that the attack on ABVP office-bearers was carried out by SFI activists with the involvement of members of other Left-wing student organisations. He also alleged links with groups associated with Left-Wing Extremism.
SFI general secretary Srijan Bhattacharya denied the allegations and said the organisation was not involved in the violence.
“What I heard is that the ABVP activists aided by local BJP associates resorted to vandalism within the campus. Why is ABVP so scared to face elections and democratically take control of the students’ body in JU?” Bhattacharya said.
The latest clash has heightened tensions on the campus, with both student groups preparing for demonstrations over the incident.
