The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the bank where Trinamool Congress general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee maintains his account to send an employee to his residence to obtain his signatures for completing the KYC process.
The direction came after the bank informed a single-judge bench of Justice Krishna Rao that online KYC updating was not possible because debit restrictions had already been imposed on Banerjee’s account.
The bank proposed that an employee visit Banerjee’s residence and obtain his signatures on the required KYC documents, allowing the process to be completed offline. The bank also informed the court about the documents Banerjee would have to submit for the KYC update.
Banerjee’s counsel opposed the immediate submission of the documents, arguing that the existing KYC remained valid until December this year. The counsel also contended that the bank should first explain the reasons for imposing debit restrictions on the account and blocking Banerjee’s credit cards.
Justice Rao, however, directed Banerjee to submit the required documents and accepted the bank’s proposal for an employee to visit his residence for the signatures.
The court said it would consider the issue of freezing of the bank account after the offline KYC process was completed.
During the proceedings, Banerjee’s counsel informed the court that the Diamond Harbour MP would travel abroad next week for eye treatment. The next hearing has been scheduled for August 24.
The matter had come up before the court earlier on Thursday, when Justice Rao questioned the bank over why online KYC updating was not being pursued and sought clarification from its authorities. The case was taken up again in the second half of the day, following which the court accepted the bank’s proposal for completing the KYC process through a visit to Banerjee’s residence.
