India has approved the export of electricity to Nepal for 18 hours a day until December 31, 2026, following extensive damage to the Himalayan country’s hydropower infrastructure caused by devastating flash floods, according to an official statement.
The Ministry of Power has approved power exports of up to 600 MW through the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit line and up to 54 MW through the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit line.
The quantum of electricity to be exported from January 2027 will be reviewed in December this year, the statement said.
The floods severely damaged hydropower infrastructure in Nepal, reducing domestic electricity generation capacity and creating an additional requirement for power. India said the approval would help Nepal meet its electricity needs during the difficult period while further strengthening longstanding energy cooperation between the two countries.
“India remains committed to supporting Nepal and strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector,” the statement said.
India has also stepped up humanitarian assistance following the floods, deploying personnel and relief supplies for search, rescue and forensic operations. Indian Air Force aircraft have transported relief and rescue material to Kathmandu.
The assistance has included mud rescue suits, gas detectors, breathing apparatus, inflatable walkways, portable generators, lighting towers and dewatering pumps. India has also supplied DNA kits, reagents and equipment for DNA profiling to help identify victims.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the flash floods has climbed to 1,386, with additional bodies recovered from eight affected districts.
The floods, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, devastated towns and villages across northern and central Nepal.
According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 104 recovered bodies have so far been identified and handed over to their families, while around 5,130 people remain missing.
Security forces continue search and rescue operations. More than 13,700 people have been rescued so far, while 339 people are undergoing treatment in hospitals.
